"Kopernikus Agenda"

European Initiative for an important offer of Pharmacists intervention

The history of the pharmacy is about 800 years old, as Frederic II introduced a law that required physicians and pharmacists to work together.

The main issue was patient care, aiming at two objectives: better quality and cost control. It is clear, that two interacting professions will provide a better service with increased quality, as 4 eyes see more than 2.

Clinical pharmacy has a comparitively short history. The first report dates back about 200 years, describing the work of a pharmacist in a hospital, to decrease the costs and to prepare a greater number of products as under normal community conditions. Preparing antiseptic solutions and mineral water was the main business. Also in the periindustrial times pharmacists had to look after patient demands.

How more that is necessary today. In our present situation , when opening a new laboratory to prepare Cytotoxic drugs, knowledge about this special preparation and the individual demands of the patient are merged.

But the process to improve pharmaceutical services continues, The next steps is the implementation of patient orientated drug distribution, often referred to as "unit-dose". Beside the logistics, the service includes pharmaceutical rounds, patient consultation and a clinical-pharmaceutical dialogue with the therapeutic team. This offers the hospitals a higher service quality and drug cost reduction of up to 20%, with a minimal increase of personnel cost around 3-5% for the pharmacy.

Under DRG conditions this advantage in quality will provide every hospital with an important topic to survive.

ESOP is offering to contribute the know-how to all pharmacists and hospitals . Germany can contribute as also others being involved in the process for better support for patients.

  VIRTUAL MEETINGS
Dear all,

As you probably know, educational sessions were web-captured during the ECCO12 conference in Copenhagen. These sessions are now available on the FECS website. We have put the link on our ESOP homepage in order to promote this new educational tool and allow our visitors to access this section.

The virtual meeting section consists of 10 hours of educational sessions and highlights of the ECCO-12 scientific program.

Many thanks for your cooperation and collaboration.

Questionnaire _Eu (English) .doc

Some localized versions are also available. Please take a look at your national site for a form in your language (if any).

The more pharmacists will partecipate to the survey the more we will know about the demands we have to work for.

The national language will offer the opportunity to everybody to be a part of our Oncology Pharmacy Movement.
