Summary from the 9th working group meeting of oncology pharmacists

On the 19th of November Zagreb hosted the 9th working group meeting of oncology pharmacists under the organization of the Croatian Pharmaceutical Society that was held together with the 3rd Congress of Croatian Society for Medical Oncology, which started a day after meeting, on the 20th of November. This three-day event gathered 240 participants, including 18 foreigners, which makes it even more comprehensive than the 8th working group meeting that was held a year ago when 150 participants attended the congress.

There were also 8 satellite symposia sponsored by pharmaceutical companies that served as a clear review of recent medicine innovations and 34 posters exhibited during the congress.

All three days the emphasis was very much on the collaborative practice within healthcare professionals and their ability to work together as team, with an aim of improving outcomes of treatments of oncology patients. Accordingly, specialists from other healthcare fields are brought to deliver lectures for the first time there was an oncology nurse and a biochemist, together with oncology doctors and clinical pharmacists, who proved to be of great value in an oncology multidisciplinary team.

Workshops served as an opportunity to discuss various themes: analysis of a clinical trial; pharmacoeconomic analysis of pharmacists interventions through cases; pharmacogenetic testing a personalized approach in a colorectal carcinoma; love and sexuality in oncology patients. The latter theme is highly important for patients, but rarely discussed among healthcare professionals. Conveying topics from new treatment potentials to sex life of oncology patients, this year's workshops fulfilled everyone's expectations.

Congress speakers gave lectures on many popular issues in oncology, some of which were: tumor heterogeneity, immunooncology, cannabis in medical treatment, quality of life in cancer patients, genes associated to cancer and preserving fertility in cancer patients. Moreover, there was an overview of ASCO and ECCO/ESMO highlights, particularly stressing the latest novelties in cancer research and treatment.

A round table for pharmacists gathered colleagues from different fields of pharmacy who actively discussed and exchanged beliefs on how our profession should be instituted and what future steps are required for its improvement.

This year's congress raised many new questions among oncology experts which will surely be debated in the following meetings. Taking into account growing number of participants and lecturers, we can certainly conclude that there is more and more interest in oncology and oncology clinical pharmacy in Croatia; therefore, we invite you all to discuss ideas and make decisions with us in Dubrovnik in May 2016 on the third European Conference of Oncology Pharmacy.
